Drakensberg – Family Resort – South Africa Travel Blog
07/05/2022This Drakensberg Mountains are just two hours from Durban and four hours from Johannesburg. The first Dutch settlers named them Drakensberge or “Dragon Mountains”.
Drakensberg, South Africa’s highest mountain range, was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000 – uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park . This World Heritage Site preserves a stunning natural wilderness mountain range along with the magnificent cultural heritage of ancient rock art painted by the first inhabitants of South Africa, the San or Bushmen.
The mountain range stretches for about 1,600 km from the northernmost states of South Africa to the Eastern Cape. Hiking, rock climbing and fly fishing are the most popular hobbies here, but sitting and gazing at the beautiful scenery around you is very acceptable.
Another activity is to take a day hike to explore the caves and ledges that contain some of the more than 22,000 separate painted rock paintings of the San people. The Main Caves at Giant’s Castle offer guided tours by accredited tour guides.
When visiting, it is best to explore the park by area:
– North Drakensberg (best known in the area for the popular Royal Natal National Park)
– Central Drakensberg (catalytic and tourist facilities as well as the rock art caves of San at Giants Castle)
– South Drakensberg (great opportunities for fly and river fishing for swimming, rafting, kayaking and tubing)
Each of the areas has its own beauty and character, and all have stunning mountain views.
Drakensberg offers you a range of holiday opportunities and great accommodation. Here you will find great food and great conference and wedding facilities. Sports enthusiasts can take part in many activities, from horseback riding and fishing to sports with high adrenaline, such as quad biking, paintball and canoe tours. In addition, many of the larger resorts have a wide variety of entertainment and daily activities for children.
Drakensberg is one of the best resorts in South Africa.
